Saudi Arabia set to host 2034 FIFA World Cup as Australia drops out

Saudi Arabia’s bid to host the 2034 World Cup will go uncontested after Australia dropped out.

Saudi Arabia is all but certain to host the men's 2034 FIFA World Cup after the Australian football federation declined to enter the bidding contest. FIFA had set Tuesday as the deadline to submit a bid to host the tournament, but Australia's decision to pull out leaves Saudi Arabia as the only declared candidate.

The world governing body of soccer said on Tuesday that Saudi Arabia was the only football association to submit a proposal to host the FIFA World Cup in 2034 before the deadline expired.

FIFA had set a deadline of Tuesday for bids to be submitted to host the tournament; however, Saudi Arabia is the only declared contender following Australia's withdrawal.

Saudi Arabia is the sole contender to host the tournament after Australia announced on Tuesday that it would not be submitting a bid.

Football Australia (FA) released a statement saying, "We have investigated the opportunity to bid to host the FIFA World Cup and - having taken all factors into consideration - we have reached the conclusion not to do so for the 2034 competition."

It is anticipated that Saudi Arabia will be the host nation for the 2034 World Cup next year, although FIFA has not yet given its official approval.
